Research Position:
The Partnership for the Study of Offshore Geohazards, a multi-institution NSF PIRE (Partnership for International Research and Education) grant, is seeking applications for both graduate and undergraduate research positions funded under this award. This is a $2.3 million, 5-year grant to study offshore sediments and their role in geohazards. The project includes seven research themes that range across experimental, analytical and implementation aspects of the larger topic. A key element of the project is international collaboration with researchers at both the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG; hosted by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute) and the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) at the University of Western Australia. As part of this project, the successful candidates could spend time at either of these institutions as well as at the host U.S. institution.
Graduate student applications are sought for the research themes listed below. For each research theme, the lead research investigators and contact information is provided. Since one of the PIRE program goals is to provide international collaboration experiences for U.S. engineers and scientists, preference will be given to U.S. citizens applying for these positions. Preference will also be given to Ph.D. applicants. Interested persons should e-mail the contact person listed below for research areas of interest. Application will be made to the particular institution of the contact person and NOT to the project as a whole for the appropriate degree (either M.S. or Ph.D.) at that institution.
Undergraduate positions consist of both REU-type experiences during the summer, and extended, 6-month cooperative education experiences. All inquiries regarding undergraduate opportunities should be directed to Prof. Tom Sheahan, Northeastern University, tsheahan@coe.neu.edu
